A payment that matches nothing is still money

Short answer

Collections are matched to invoices and payments to purchase documents. What does not match is not hidden: it sits as an advance until it is linked, so the bank balance and the customer balance never disagree.

Collections and payments against the documents they belong to.

Forcing a match is worse than leaving it open

Attaching a payment to the nearest plausible invoice makes the screen tidy and the accounts wrong. Later nobody can tell which invoice was actually paid.

An unmatched amount stays an advance on the account: visible, counted and waiting for the document it belongs to.
